DJ Chus is entering a new phase of artistic renewal. With more than three decades in the industry, the Spanish DJ and producer revisits his career, reflects on the transformations of electronic music and shares a perspective increasingly guided by authenticity, emotion and the creation of music that can transcend generations. At the helm of Stereo Productions, he continues to connect different generations of producers and expand the musical identity established by the label.

Recent releases include remixes of “Underwater”, a 2022 track that has received new interpretations from Brazilian producer JØRD and French producer JATS. For Chus, preserving the emotional essence of a composition while exploring new sonic possibilities is a fundamental part of that evolution. The artist also highlights the importance of discovering new talent, following the transformations of the Brazilian scene and keeping Stereo Productions’ identity in constant development.

The reunion with Pablo Ceballos marks another important chapter. After a five-year hiatus, Chus & Ceballos resumed their partnership in 2026 with an international tour and the releases of “Somos Uno” and “Closer to You”. The reunion rekindles the creative connection between the two artists and opens the door to new experiences, keeping the legacy of Iberican Sound alive. In an exclusive interview with Mixmag Brasil, Chus shares insights into this new phase and his outlook for 2027 and beyond.

A resposta à The Reunion Tour tem sido incrível.

Q+A: DJ CHUS (English)

When we interviewed you for Mixmag Brasil back in 2020, you shared stories about your early days in electronic music, your experiences in Portugal and the journey that shaped your career. Six years later, with so much having changed in the industry and in your own musical journey, what has been the biggest shift in your perspective as an artist and producer?

I think the biggest change is that, with experience, you become more aware of what really matters. When you’re young, you’re hungry to prove yourself, achieve things, and push boundaries. Today, I’m still hungry, but my priorities have evolved. I’m more interested in authenticity, emotion, and creating music that stands the test of time. The industry has changed dramatically, especially with streaming and social media shaping how people consume music.

Everything moves faster, but I believe our responsibility as artists is to create something that goes beyond the moment. I’ve been fortunate to experience different eras of electronic music, and each one has taught me something. Ultimately, I still approach music with the same passion I had when I started, but with a much clearer understanding of who I am and what I want to communicate.

Stereo Productions has spent more than two decades building a distinctive identity and connecting artists across generations. Looking at the label today, how has your approach to A&R and discovering new talent evolved, and what do you believe makes a record truly belong on Stereo Productions?

Stereo Productions has always been about identity, not following trends. We’ve been doing this for more than 25 years, and one of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that a label needs to evolve without losing its soul. My approach to A&R is very intuitive. Technical quality and production skills matter, of course, but I’m especially interested in personality.

I want to hear something that makes me stop and pay attention, something that tells me there’s an artist behind the music rather than simply a producer following a formula. A record doesn’t necessarily have to sound like something we released lately to belong on Stereo Productions. It needs character, energy, and an emotional connection with the dancefloor. Our identity has always been broader than a particular sound. It’s about a musical philosophy, a certain attitude and a genuine understanding of club culture.

Your 2022 track “Underwater”, originally inspired by Harry Thumann’s classic, has received new remixes from JØRD and JATS. What made you choose these two producers to revisit such a personal record, and how do their different interpretations reflect the musical direction you’re exploring with Stereo Productions today?

Underwater is a very special record for me because, beyond its electronic music foundations, it carries a powerful emotional message. My interpretation of Harry Thumann’s classic is built around hope, expressed through a melody that elevates the senses and takes you somewhere beyond the dancefloor. For me, that is the true DNA of the track. When I decided to revisit it, I didn’t want two remixes that updated the production. I wanted artists who could bring their own identity while respecting the original's emotional essence.

JØRD brings a powerful, contemporary energy, with his own approach to dynamics and melodic tension. JATS offers a different perspective, exploring the relationship between groove and Disco atmosphere, with fantastic female vocals that make a clear distinction. Both interpretations reveal different dimensions of the same composition. That’s what excites me about these remixes. They demonstrate that a strong melody can survive different production approaches and generations. At Stereo Productions, we want to embrace new sounds without losing the emotional connection that makes electronic music so powerful.

JØRD represents a new wave of Brazilian producers, while JATS brings his own blend of House, Disco and Indie Dance influences. Having worked with artists across different generations, what do you find most exciting about today’s emerging talent, and what can established producers learn from them?

What excites me most is their freedom. Many emerging producers have grown up with access to an incredible amount of music, technology, and production knowledge. They can move between genres and influences without feeling restricted by traditional boundaries. I also think younger artists are challenging established ideas about what electronic music should sound like. That keeps the scene alive.

However, I believe there is an important difference between having access to everything and developing a truly personal identity. Established producers can learn a lot from the energy, curiosity, and willingness to experiment that younger artists bring to the studio. In return, experience can teach them the importance of patience, musical storytelling and understanding why a record works on a dancefloor. I’ve always believed that electronic music progresses through this exchange between generations. You need to respect the past, but you should never fear the future.

After a five-year hiatus, Chus & Ceballos reunited in 2026 with The Reunion Tour and the release of “Somos Uno”. What brought you and Pablo Ceballos back together, and how did it feel to reconnect creatively and return to the stage as a duo after such a long break?

Sometimes, life takes you in different directions, and you need time to explore your own path. Pablo and I have shared an enormous part of our lives through music, and that connection never really disappeared, even when we weren’t working together. After five years apart, we reached a point where reconnecting felt natural. We didn't need to recreate what we had done before or prove anything to anyone. We wanted to enjoy making music together again. The response to The Reunion Tour has been incredible.

Starting 2026 with two sold-out shows at Stereo Montreal was a very emotional experience. Seeing the enthusiasm of our fans, some of whom have followed us for decades, reminded us of the special relationship we’ve built with them. And creatively, it feels fresh. We bring all our previous experiences into the studio, but we’re not trying to live in the past. ‘Somos Uno’ a few months ago and now ‘Closer To You’ represents that spirit perfectly: two individuals, two musical personalities, united by a common vision. This isn't just a reunion; it’s the start of a new chapter.

Your new release “Closer to You”, alongside Pablo Ceballos, Toni Rios and Niveska, arrives on October 16 through Yulia Niko’s AXEPT, marking the label’s 50th release. What drew you to revisit this 2018 track, and how does the collaboration reflect Chus & Ceballos' musical identity in this new chapter?

‘Closer to You’ already had a history, so revisiting it gave us a chance to look at the original through the lens of everything we’ve experienced since 2018. When Pablo and I returned to the studio, we didn’t want to reproduce the past. We wanted to preserve the track's emotional essence while giving it a new identity that reflects where we are today. The nostalgia is still there, but the production and energy feel present.

Releasing it on Yulia Niko’s AXEPT makes it even more special. Reaching the label’s 50th release is an important milestone, and we’re happy to be part of that moment. For me, Closer to You reflects what Chus & Ceballos have always been about: strong grooves, emotional melodies, and music designed to connect with people. The difference now is that we’re approaching everything with fresh eyes and the excitement of rediscovering what we can achieve together.

The Iberican Sound has been a defining part of your musical legacy, influencing generations of producers through its combination of tribal percussion, Latin rhythms and house grooves. With electronic music constantly evolving, how do you see that sound fitting into today’s club culture, and where would you like to take it next?

Iberican Sound has never been simply a collection of rhythms or production techniques. For me, it’s about bringing together different cultural influences through house music, with percussion, Latin spirit, emotion, and a strong sense of groove. It’s a sound with a soul. What makes it relevant today is that people are constantly looking for authenticity and a deeper connection on the dancefloor. Trends come and go, but rhythm is a universal language.

You can hear elements of what we explored years ago in many corners of today’s electronic music scene. However, I don’t want to recreate the past or turn Iberican Sound into a formula. Its future depends on letting it evolve, incorporating new influences, and working with artists who bring different perspectives to the table. I want to take it somewhere more sophisticated and emotionally adventurous, while preserving its essential spirit. The objective is not to make music that sounds like Iberican Sound. It’s to make music that makes you feel it.

You’ve maintained a connection with Brazilian electronic music over the years, and Stereo Productions continues to work with talent from the country. How do you see the Brazilian scene today compared with when we last spoke in 2020, and are there any artists or developments that have particularly caught your attention?

Brazil has always had a special place in my musical journey. The country has an extraordinary relationship with rhythm, and its electronic music scene reflects that cultural richness. Since 2020, I’ve seen Brazilian producers become increasingly visible internationally, with a much stronger presence across different areas of electronic music.

The production quality is exceptional, but what interests me most is how many artists blend international influences with their own cultural identity. JØRD is a great example of the new generation, bringing his own perspective and energy to contemporary electronic music. The broader Brazilian scene is also seeing exciting developments, with artists exploring different combinations of house, Afro-influenced rhythms, and melodic elements.

Vintage Culture, Mochack, Wehbba, DJ Anna, Gabbs, and Brisotti, to name a few, are doing amazing work! At Stereo Productions, we want to continue building relationships with Brazilian talent because we believe in the music, not simply because a particular sound is popular at the moment. Brazil has given electronic music so much, and I believe its influence will keep growing.

Looking ahead to 2027 and beyond, what can we expect from DJ Chus, the reunited Chus & Ceballos and Stereo Productions? Are there new releases, collaborations, special projects or ambitions you’re particularly excited about, and what would you most like to achieve in this next phase of your career?

A lot is happening, and I’m genuinely excited about this new chapter. With Chus & Ceballos, The Reunion Tour has opened the door to a new creative period. We want to keep releasing music together, explore new directions in the studio, and bring that connection to dancefloors around the world. The most important thing is to keep enjoying the process and creating music that means something to us. As DJ CHUS, I’ll continue developing my own projects and collaborations.

At the same time, Stereo Productions will keep pushing forward with new talent, established artists, and releases that reflect the diversity of contemporary electronic music. Our mission remains the same: to discover great music and connect people through it. After so many years in this industry, I’m less interested in counting achievements than in creating meaningful experiences. I want to keep surprising myself, work with artists who inspire me, and share music with people who feel the same passion I do. If there’s one thing I’ve learned throughout this journey, it’s that the music never really stops evolving, and neither should we.
